Austria

The Resort

Austria offer thousands of kilometers of ski routes, spread across all ability levels from complete novice to the most ardent expert. With a tremendous tradition of pioneering ski holidays, Austria is also more than willing to embrace newer snow-bound activities such as snowboarding, snow scooters and snow bikes.

Austria makes good use of its glaciers with a number having high-profile resorts close by. Compared to France its ski areas are far more manageable, with an obvious emphasis on quality rather than quantity. The Tyrol is both the best known and the largest of the Austrian winter sports destinations, with well known resorts such as St Anton, Obergurgl, Mayrhofen, Ischgl and Kitzbühel.

The ‘Streif’ (‘Stripe’) course on Kitzbühel’s Hahnenkamm (‘Roosters Comb’) is probably the most famous, and most demanding on the FIS World Cup circuit.

At A Glance

  • Very snow sure resorts
  • Great for intermediate and advanced skiers/boarders
  • Most resort centres are car free making them safe & more charming
  • World class off piste for all levels (guides available)
  • Over 50 bars, lots of nightlife and shopping in St Anton!

Resorts in Austria

St Anton Ski Resort

From exclusive areas such as the cruising paradises that are Lech and Zürs to the sunny aspect of Sonnekopf's powder runs, there is enough to challenge any level of skier.

Intermediates and Advanced skiers are probably the happiest in St Anton, but the welcome for beginners is warm.

Apres Ski

Apres Ski in Austria is probably the best in the World. This is not because it is more raucous or manic but, the welcome from even the smallest bars in the hardest to reach ski villages is invariably the warmest in the Alps.

In another departure from the French approach to ski holidays, the Austrians have avoided the large purpose built style resorts (e.g. La Plagne and Avoriaz).

They tend to favour an updated and modernised traditional type of development, rather than apartment blocks.. In general the standards of Austrian Chalets and Hotels is extremely high.

Why not try Snowboarding?

Snowboarding is also extremely popular in Austria, with a strong tradition of welcoming British ‘boarders. The semi-mythical Snowboard UK magazine summer Board Test became a fixture at Hintertux and then Kaprun, and a British Board Test is still held at Kaunertal, usually in early May.

What was the British Snowboard Championships transformed itself into The Brits (freeski & snowboard competition and music event), which puts it’s roots down in Laax during March.

Mayrhofen is the chosen regular venue for Snowbombing, which has featured the musical likes of Fat Boy Slim, Dizzee Rascal and Doves.

Innsbruck’s Air+Style event was for many years the most prestigious of all the big air events, giving rise to the numerous events we see in many cities around the world (e.g. London, Munich, Moscow)
